So while Israel was created and called to be a people of God through whom all nations would be blessed, God designated Moses' brother Aaron and his male heirs: (Exodus 28:35, 43 ; Exodus 39:1) , and the Levites: (Num. 18: 2; Deut. 10: 8) to perform specific functions in the worship and service of God within Israel. .......

For Christians Jesus is the supreme model of a minister. In His inaugural sermon in the synagogue at Nazareth, Jesus read from the Prophet Isaiah, summarizing the purpose and the many dimensions of His ministry: (Luke 4: 18-19.)

Although Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth, His style of leadership and ministry was not one of dominating His followers: (Mark 10: 42) but one of service. On one occasion when James and John sought prominent places in Jesus' kingdom, He reminded them, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life--a ransom for many: (Mark 10: 45 HCSB)

Jesus' ministry included teaching, preaching, evangelism, casting out demons, healing, providing for physical needs of people, and counseling. His supreme act of ministry was His obedience to the Father in going to the cross where He gave His life to atone for the sins of the world.

Jesus' ministry did not end with His rssurrection from death and acension to the right hand of the Father. Luke introduces his history of the early church by reminding his reader, Theophitus, that in his first volume, he described "all that Jesus began to do and teach until the day He was taken up" : (Acts 1: 1-2 HCSB)

Luke is saying in effect that Jesus continues to do what He was doing. Before He did this as a person; now He is doing these things through His people, the church.

Ministry in Christ's church looks like Jesus' ministry on earth. God the Holy Spirit, Christ's representative in the church gives a variety of roles and gifts to those in the church for the purpose of the ministry. These include preaching, evangelism, teaching, pastoral care, and administration.

Three principal Greek words translated "minister" all carry a connotation of service rather than domination. Diakonos: (Mark 10: 43; Eph. 3: 7; 6: 21).

In some passages translated "deacon," has the connotation of one who waits on tables. Huperetes: (Luke 1: 2; 1 Cor. 4: 1) originally designated the under-rowers who labored in a ship's belly. Leitourgos: (Rom. 13: 6; 15: 16; Heb. 1:7) was used of a servant of the state or a temple. See Offices in the New Testament; Ordination, Ordain; Pastor; Priests.
